Switching From Gas to Induction in a Bay Area Kitchen: Wiring, Rebates and Rules

By ProRock Remodeling · CSLB #1154078 · Updated

Short answerSwitching from gas to induction usually means adding a dedicated 240-volt circuit, confirming your panel has room and capping the gas line. In 2026, local providers like SVCE still offer induction and wiring rebates, while California's HEEHRA rebates are fully reserved and the federal 25C credit has ended. Reach codes generally don't force existing kitchens to go electric.
SVCE induction rebate$500 replacing gas ($750 income-qualified)
SVCE electrical add-ons$500 per circuit/device; $1,000 panel
Federal 25C creditEnded for property placed in service after 2025

What does it take to switch a kitchen from gas to induction?

Three things: a dedicated electrical circuit that matches the new cooktop or range, room in your electrical panel for that circuit, and a properly capped gas line. If your kitchen already has an electric range, the Switch Is On campaign notes you're likely already set up. If you've been cooking on gas since your Willow Glen bungalow was new, plan on some electrical work.

What electrical circuit does an induction cooktop need?

Full-size induction ranges and cooktops typically run on a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and the manufacturer's installation manual sets the breaker size. Larger professional-style ranges can need more than one circuit. Read the manual before you buy, not after the electrician arrives.

Moving the cooktop to an island? Switch Is On points out that islands frequently don't have a dedicated circuit, so expect new wiring there. There are also 120-volt induction ranges that plug into a regular outlet, including battery-equipped models, which can avoid a panel upgrade altogether.

Do you need a panel upgrade for induction?

Not always. Switch Is On notes that panels sometimes don't have room for a new range circuit without an upgrade, especially if you're also adding a heat pump or EV charger. An electrician can check whether your panel handles the added load. Here are the common paths:

Your situationTypical pathSVCE support (2026)
Existing electric range circuitReuse it if it matches the new unit's specs$100 for induction replacing an electric range
Panel has space and capacityNew dedicated circuit with an electrical permitWiring add-on, $500 per circuit
Panel is full or near capacityCircuit splitter or pauser device$500 per device (up to $2,000 total for wiring and devices)
Service too smallPanel or service upgrade$1,000 add-on

Most of these jobs typically need an electrical permit, and capping the gas line may need its own sign-off. Check with your city; our San Jose permit guide shows how the process works there.

What rebates are actually available in 2026?

Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE). SVCE serves Santa Clara County communities including Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Milpitas and Los Altos. Its home rebates page, updated in September 2026, lists $500 for an induction cooktop or range replacing gas ($750 if income-qualified) and up to $250 for induction cookware. Add-ons include $500 per circuit or splitter/pauser device (up to $2,000), $1,000 for an electrical panel upgrade and a $500 all-electric bonus for removing the gas meter. Rebates apply to existing homes, not new construction, and must be approved before installation.

WestLight Energy (formerly Peninsula Clean Energy). San Mateo County's provider changed its name in July 2026. According to the City of Menlo Park, rates, programs and rebates stayed the same. Use its Rebate Finder for current induction offers.

San Jose and city utilities. We couldn't confirm a current 2026 induction rebate from San Jose Clean Energy, so check its site before you buy. Homes served by a city-owned utility, such as Santa Clara or Palo Alto, have separate programs.

State and federal. According to TECH Clean California, the state's federally funded HEEHRA rebates listed $840 for an electric stove only for income-qualified multifamily projects, and those were fully reserved as of September 1, 2026. The single-family HEEHRA rebates covered heat pumps, not stoves, and were fully reserved in February 2026. The federal 25C home improvement credit is gone: the IRS says it isn't allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Programs change often, so confirm before you count on any of them.

Do Bay Area reach codes require induction?

Not for a typical kitchen remodel. Reach codes are local energy rules that go beyond state code, and Bay Area versions have mainly targeted new buildings. San Jose currently has a moratorium on enforcing its natural gas infrastructure prohibition, and its recent reach code updates apply to new construction. For most existing homes, going electric in the kitchen is your choice. Check your city if you're adding square footage or an ADU. See our guide to California energy and water rules for remodels.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new circuit for an induction cooktop?

Usually. Full-size induction cooktops and ranges typically need a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the manufacturer's instructions. If you already have an electric range circuit it may work, and 120-volt plug-in models are another option.

Is there a rebate for induction stoves in the Bay Area in 2026?

Yes, in some areas. SVCE lists $500 for induction replacing gas ($750 income-qualified) plus wiring and panel add-ons, and WestLight Energy (formerly Peninsula Clean Energy) lists current offers in its Rebate Finder. Programs change, so confirm before you buy.

Can I still get the federal 25C tax credit for an electric panel?

No. The IRS says the 25C credit isn't allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Before that, it allowed up to $600 for a qualifying panel upgrade that supported other energy property.

Is the $840 HEEHRA induction stove rebate available in California?

Not for new projects. California's HEEHRA stove rebate was offered only for income-qualified multifamily projects, and those rebates were fully reserved as of September 1, 2026.

Does San Jose require induction when I remodel my kitchen?

Not currently. San Jose has a moratorium on enforcing its natural gas infrastructure prohibition, and its reach code updates apply to new construction. Check with the city if your project adds square footage.
